For the Orca (the new and improved version of the well known Versatile) we aimed at developing more comfort, better riding characteristics and more safety. The Orca has a fully enclosed drive train. This is a unique drive train technology, which offers thousands of kilometres of maintenance free and care free cycling pleasure. All three single sided wheels (20” – 406) are engineered with suspension. The front wheels are equipped with drum brakes and the rear wheel with a disc brake (also parking brake).
With special flexible components, the wheels are being mounted to the self supporting chassis. In this way all vibrations from the road surface will be absorbed and not passed on to the chassis. Because of the large cover which can be opened with a hinge and the absence of a traditional handle bar, getting in to and getting out of the Orca is a piece of cake. The Orca is being operated by 2 control sticks, a left hand stick and a right hand stick, both assembled on the inside of the chassis on the wheel covers. The operation is very user friendly, natural and only needs a little training. Steering the Orca can be done with one hand only, left or right, or with both hands. The same goes for the braking of the Orca; left hand or right hand or both, it doesn’t matter, both drum brakes will be actuated simultaneously. The position of the crank axle and the rider’s seat are both fully adjustable. Therefore the Orca can fit all riders with a stature height from 1.65 to 2.00m.

For the self supporting chassis we are using Twintex, a continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic material. Twintex has a glass to weight percentage of 65%. The fibres are a hybrid mix of continuous glass filaments combined with continuous thermoplastic filaments (PP polypropylene) with on average the same diameters. Because of the subtle, homogeneous distribution of filaments within the Twintex material, one can make composite products with very short cycle times and relatively low pressures without compromising the consistency of the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of Twintex with PP are similar to Polyester with high glass to weight percentages, just with one exception.... The impact resistance and wear resistance of Twintex are much better. Also the chemical resistance and especially the moisture resistance of Twintex are very good.

Rohloff hub, speedhub and reducer at the same time
The distinguished Rohloff speedhub is a state of the art piece of technology which perfectly blends in with the high tech Orca. The Orca requires a maintenance free and idiot proof drive train system with large gear ratio, high efficiency, the possibility of shifting during stand still, easy operation, light actuation and of course a long lifespan. Within the Orca the Rohloff speedhub functions as a gear box with equal steps between the gears. Each step means a 13.6% increase, therefore the 14 speeds in the Rohloff speedhub offer a gear ratio of 526%. Similar to the gear ratio of a 27 speed derailleur drive train, but without the disadvantages of a derailleur drive train. Besides, when taking into consideration the traditional overlap of gears and the way the chain is running, a regular 27 speed derailleur drive train effectively only has 15 efficient gears. The Rohloff speed hub has only one disadvantage: a relatively high purchase price. Nevertheless, the return on investment is high; the hub can be used for many years without maintenance or replacement of spare parts!
